چکیده

Mullite–SiC nanocomposites are synthesized by introducing surface modified sol–gel mullite coated SiC particles in the matrix and densification and associated microstructural features of such precursor are reported. Nanosize SiC (average size 180 nm) surface was first provided with a mullite precursor coating which was characterized by the X-ray analysis and TEM. An average coating thickness of 120 nm was obtained on the SiC particles. The green compacts obtained by cold isostatic pressing were sintered in the range 1500–1700°C under pressureless sintering in the N2 atmosphere. The percentage of the theoretical sintered density decreases with increase in SiC content. A maximum sintered density of 97% was achieved for mullite–5 vol.% SiC. The fractograph of the sintered composite showed a highly dense, fine grained microstructure with the SiC particles uniformly distributed along the grains as well as at the grain boundaries inside the mullite. The Vicker’s microhardness of mullite–5 vol.% SiC composite was measured as 1320 kg/mm under an applied indentation load of 500 g. This value gradually decreased with an increase in SiC content.

Sol-gel synthesis and characterization of alumina-15%mullite composite nanopowder

Homogeneous distribution of mullite in the matrix of alumina can be obtained through sol-gel method. In this work, nanopowder of alumina-mullite composite was synthesized with high homogeneity and high purity. So aluminum chloride hexahydrate and tetraethyl orthosilicate were used instead of alumina or mullite nanopowder. Studying the simultaneouse thermal analysis (STA) of mullite precursor re...

Electrospun mullite fibers from the sol–gel precursor

Mullite fibers with diameters from 400 nm to 10 lm were fabricated from the sol–gel precursors using the electrospinning method. During the precursor synthesis, the hydrolysis was controlled to obtain highly viscous mullite sols. The viscous mullite sols were then diluted and mixed with a small amount of polyethylene oxide. Controlling the precursor rheology and spinning conditions, we obtained...

Structural and Optical Properties of Sr-Modified Bismuth Silicate Nanostructured Films Synthesized by Sol Gel Method

In this work, the effects of strontium addition on the structure and optical properties of nanostructured bismuth silicate (Bi4Si3O12) thin films prepared via sol-gel were studied. At first, different sols containing the optimum ratio of precursors were synthesized, and then, the prepared sols were coated on the substrate via dip coating. The dip coated samples were dried at 100oC and, in order...

A STUDY ON SINTERING BEHAVIORS OF COPPER COATED SIC COMPOSITE POWDERS FABRICATED BY ELECTROLESS PLATING AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF THE CONSOLIDATED COMPOSITES

Copper coated SiC powders having three different amounts of copper, in the range of 20-60 wt%, were prepared via electroless coating process. The produced composite powders were uniaxially cold compressed and sintered at different temperatures and times under protective atmosphere. It was found that composite Cu/SiC powders and a relatively dense copper matrix composite with a uniform distribut...
